The Sabine Bluegrass Band
|

The elusive Sabine Bluegrass Band, also
known as "Crabgrass", includes members
from both sides of the lower Sabine River and
has been performing as a group for about a
quarter of a century. The aggregrate musical
experience of the members is about a quarter
of a millineum. Really. (Hey, that's only 250
years.)
Louisiana native Antoine "Ted" Hanks (dec)
of Beaumont TX sang lead for many years,
with tenor harmonies by Earl Cochran Jr of
Vidor TX.
Currently Earl sings lead and tenor, plays the
guitar, and is designated driver. Earl is a
District Manager for Lance Foods, and
thereby has the distinction of being the only
member of the band that has a job.
Banjo and vocal duties were performed for
many years by original member David
Odegar, of Orange TX, and later Pat Legros
of Sulphur LA, both well know banjoists
across the region. That's Pat picking on the
"Live! At the Port Arthur Art Museum" CD.
Newcomer Earl "Trey" Cochran III of Vidor TX
now holds the 5-string post. Trey also sings
lead and tenor, attends Lamar University, and
is hoping for both a job and a girl friend.
Edy Mathews of Lumberton TX plays the
bass. Edy is editor emeritus of the Pick 'N'
Bow newsletter of the Southeast Texas
Bluegrass Music Association (SETBMA). Edy
is the shortest member of the band.
Elton Brindley of Starks LA has been fiddling
around for nigh on 60 years. He is an
erstwhile member of Cats and the Fiddle and
innumerable other bluegrass, gospel, cajun,
country, and honky-tonk bands. Elton can't
sing.
Gerald Block of Vidor TX plays the mandolin
and is editor of the Sabine Bluegrass
website. Gerald can't sing either, but he can
spell good.
The Sabine Bluegrass Band appears more or
less regularly at bluegrass venues across
southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana.
Crabgrass works cheap and is available for
most any kind of event that involves food. To
